For two years, Jane Beale has gone to extreme lengths to protect her prepubescent stepson Bobby from prosecution for the murder of his half-sister Lucy. Even throughout Bobby’s subsequent angry outbursts, which have included throwing Jane down the stairs, Jane has maintained her support for the boy.
Unfortunately, Jane and Ian’s joint decision to send Bobby to boarding school is about to come back and haunt them in a horrible way. After Ian’s plans to sell Beales Restaurant fall through, the prospect of keeping his son at the school diminishes.
Bobby is brought home in a rage over the upheaval and soon lashes out. Brutally attacking Jane with a hockey stick, Bobby stands over his blood-splattered stepmother, staring at the blood dripping from Stacey and Martin’s wedding cake nearby.
Coming to his senses, Bobby runs to The Vic to confess his actions, leaving Ian horrified by his wife’s near-death state. With Jane fighting for her life in hospital, her mother Linda and brother Christian race back to Walford to hear that Jane may be left paralysed for life.
Linda blames Ian for Bobby’s actions and turns on him while Jane awakens to learn her fate. Shattered, Jane tells Ian their marriage is over.
