Healing the heartache
Father Michael Kerrigan’s role as the local priest in a Northern England parish is to help and heal the troubled and desperate parishioners he encounters. Beneath his professional obligations lurks hidden pain of his own that also needs salving.
The accidental death of Vernon Oyenusi, a mentally ill and suicidal young man, supposedly due to Michael’s failure to take a distress call from Vernon’s mother Helen, is the catalyst for the priest’s cathartic confession of a past indiscretion. While counselling Andrew Powell, the police officer who shot Vernon, Michael confesses that as a schoolboy he was sexually molested by his Catholic English teacher Father Matthew.
The revelation prompts him to seek out his now-elderly abuser but he’s left angry and plagued by disturbing flashbacks to his past when Matthew shows no remorse.
Hell bent on making a difference, Michael strives to save the life of Roz Demichelis, a parishioner and gambling addict on the verge of suicide after defrauding her workplace of huge sums to feed her addiction.
