WHEN Sheila GATHERS THE COURAGE TO FLEE THEIR MARRIAGE, Stan TAKES HIS ANGER OUT ON Sarah AND THE WOMEN’S CLINIC!
Stan loses it at Sheila and targets the Women’s Clinic!
“Stan snaps, “taking a gun and storming into the clinic to confront a petrified Sarah!”
Farmer Stan O’Rourke believes a woman should be seen and not heard and who should do what her husband tells her! The Inverness locals even resorted to bashing her when she even dares to act any differently – and the only respite Sheila’s had from her domestic pain is in her association with the comforting Sarah at the Women’s Clinic. She’s encouraging Sheila to fight for her rights and leave an abusive Stan… before he kills her!
At long last, following a double mastectomy for breast cancer -- for which Stan (Jack Ellis) beat her up -- and the loss of her house after Stan burned it down – Sheila (Nell Nakkan) finds the strength to walk out on the mongrel. Unfortunately, her decision is met with contempt from the wider conservative community of Inverness. In rural NSW, circa 1960, it’s abhorrent that a woman has deserted her marriage.
With the locals lashing out, it’s Sarah (Marta Dusseldorp) who bears the brunt of their wrath, as they blame the forward-thinking clinic for encouraging Sheila’s “madness”. Inflamed by the community rallying, and after injuring Henry (Tim Draxl) and learning that George (Brett Climo) and Roy (Frankie J. Holden) are investigating him over the “accident”, Stan’s anger builds as he struggles with his confusion as to why his wife left him. Finally, he threatens the Women’s Clinic with retribution.
Unable to control his emotions, Stan snaps, taking a gun and storming into the clinic to confront a petrified Sarah. The argument intensifies until Stan lashes out and tries to kill her! It’s a horrifying indictment of a disturbed man whose staunchly traditional values can’t or won’t allow him to accept that women’s role in society is changing... much for the better.
