SAVING CEMETERIES AND FARMS, MATCHMAKING THE LOVELORN AND PLAYING DR MUM – IT’S ALL IN A DAY’S WORK FOR Meryl
Meryl thinks she has all the answers to Whyhope’s woes
amateur farmer Hugh has literally dug himself into a hole and stuffed his back (above), leaving it to Meryl to play maternal medico and sort him out. Her unorthodox medical solution does the trick and Hugh’s raring to go!
No sooner has one son’s little drama been rectified than Ajax (Matt Castley) steps up with a problem to solve. The Whyhope Cemetery is to be replaced by a football field, necessitating the relocation of all graves! Outraged, Ajax plans to stage a graveyard demonstration... until he calms down and ponders a more rational idea. Approaching Meryl, Ajax suggests uprooting the entire cemetery and transplanting it to Arcadia, which will enable the Knights to share in the profits.
Dollar signs dancing in her eyes, Meryl jumps aboard to enact the most crucial part of the plan, to trick Hugh (as the farm’s owner) to sign the forms for the relocation. Mum saves the day yet again, not pausing to weigh up the price she might pay down the track for duping her son!
With the cemetery safe and Hugh’s spine behaving itself, it’s back to the business of love and money for Meryl, who soon strikes it lucky! After decreeing that Penny (Hayley McElhinney) needs a man, Meryl thinks she’s found the one! His name’s Raph (Don Hany) and Meryl wants Penny to go out on a date with him. Hesitantly agreeing, Penny begins to harbour high hopes for the evening, however, they’re soon dashed when issues surrounding their respective children prompt an argument. Could Meryl’s rescue efforts blow up in her face?
That’s the crucial question hovering over her next, and most important, problem! Thanks to Meryl conning Hugh regarding Arcadia’s acquiring the cemetery, a determined Hugh has gone and sold the farm out from under the family! Meryl’s shock is palpable, especially when she discovers who’s bought it. Confronting Hugh, intent on learning why the new owner paid such a high price for the property, Meryl suspects there’s something about the land the family doesn’t know about. Evidence soon emerges that the owner wants to re-sell to a mining giant and Meryl’s livid! How is she going to fix this?
That’s easy... because once the new owner ends up in the cardiac unit for pacemaker surgery, Meryl busts in and interrogates the patient while they’re under twilight anaesthetic! Mrs Knight knows the family’s fortunes are riding on her success or failure right here, right now – because if she gets the answers she needs, the Knights will be a cool $3 million richer!
