Sennheiser Orpheus

Sound+Image - - First Decade -

The Sennheiser Orpheus was released as a limited edition of 300, perhaps because at the time no-one could believe the US$16,000 pricing, even given its own stunning valve amplification. But it became a landmark product that was still wowing crowds at events right up to the release of its successor, the HE 1 (often but erroneously also called the Orpheus), which some lucky visitors to the recent Australian Hi-Fi & AV Show got to audition. Although both the Orpheus and its successor have encouraged others to produce similarly stratospherically-priced headphone systems, we applaud Sennheiser for reaching high and delivering the pinnacle in its product category. Our Ultimate 30 was always going to include the magnificent Orpheus headphones.
