Weather we get a mention

South Burnett Times - - SOUTH BURNETT BUDGET - Helen Spelitis helen.spelitis@southburnett

BEHIND the scenes work to get the South Burnett on the map – literally – has amped up in the past five months.

A new weather station for Kingaroy airport is part of almost $3 million allocated in the council budget to be spent on building and property assets.

Technological advances in data recording and the need for compliance have brought on the upgrade, but Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said there is a hidden benefit to having the up to date technology.

For five months he has been petitioning television news channels, including WIN, to regularly include Kingaroy and the South Burnett on the nightly weather bulletins.

And the new station will make it even easier for the data to be accessed, giving us a better chance of making the news.

“It’s very important, we want to make sure Kingaroy or the South Burnett is mentioned.

“So many people just take it for granted (being included in the weather bulletin) but to me it’s a great tourism and economic boost because you get your name out there.

“And it’s not just us talking about ourselves – it’s the weather girl talking about us.”

Being featured on the news might be another tool to attract new comers to the region, but it is also a benefit to residents, making the news more relatable.
