THE manager at Nanango’s Palace Hotel reckons he is U.G.L.Y.

“It’ll probably make most of my patrons happy because they don’t think I’m all that good looking,” Beau Smith said.

The title of U.G.L.Y. Bartender stands for Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You and is part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual fundraising appeal.

“It gives back to a good cause,” Mr Smith said.

“Every $80 raised pays for one night’s accommodation for a family or a single person.”

Each weekend the Palace hosts live music and Mr Smith passes a tin around chasing small donations.

“We have raffles, we shake the tin and have the musicians announce for it,” Mr Smith said.

The charity drive runs until the end of September after fundraising for about two weeks. Mr Smith has $180 in the bank but he is pushing for an ambitious target of $3000.

“We’re still working on different ideas, I know the RSL is doing it as well, a lady down there by the name of Jenna Adams has leukaemia and we went to school together. It’s one of those things that affects families deeply.”

To donate, drop in to the Palace Hotel on Drayton St or visit uglybar and search for Beau Smith.
