LONG-TIME South Burnett residents Brian and Elizabeth Chambers celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary yesterday.

The couple married in England before travelling to Australia under the assisted passage scheme in the mid-1960s with their four children, Sandra, Keith, Alec and 18-month-old Lena.

After arriving in Australia the family expanded by two more children, Helen and Kevin.

Mrs Chambers said it was a short but sweet courtship for the two, who met in Southampton in their mid-20s.

“We only had six months together before we got married. I was working as a drapery shop assistant with Brian’s sister, who introduced us. It wasn’t exactly love at first sight but it didn’t take long for us to warm to each other,” Mrs Chambers said.

After marrying, Mr Chambers joined the Royal Navy to provide a better lifestyle for his family.

Brian spent the first five years of their marriage as a boilerman in the Royal Navy, sailing around the world on the Queen Mary and RMS Queen Elizabeth.

The family were given only nine days to prepare for their departure to Australia, which was no small feat for the young couple, who would never see their family again.

After working in various places throughout Australia, the Chambers settled in the South Burnett 38 years ago.

“When we first arrived in Australia we lived in New South Wales, but the children weren’t happy so we packed up the car and drove to Queensland,” Mrs Chambers said.

“We didn’t know where we were going but we ended up in the South Burnett. This is the longest time we’ve lived anywhere.”

The couple, now in their mid-80s, reside together in Murgon’s Castra Retirement Village.

November 8 marked 60 years of marriage but the couple said it felt like any other anniversary.

“We weren’t expecting to receive this much attention,” Mrs Chambers said, adding she was surprised to receive a congratulatory letter from the Queen.

“I’m not sure what we will do with her letter yet, we might put it in an album with some of our other

special letters and photographs.

“After 60 years together you collect a lot of memories together.”
