Firearms amnesty ‘very suc­cess­ful’

COL­LECTABLE firearms, Ger­man Luger pis­tols, sawn-off shot­guns and even a home­made ri­fle with a home­made si­lencer are among the items which have been handed in dur­ing the Na­tional Firearms Amnesty so far.

With the amnesty fin­ish­ing on Septem­ber 30, South West po­lice are en­cour­ag­ing il­le­gal gun hold­ers to turn in their firearms dur­ing the “no prose­cu­tion, no penalty” pe­riod.

So far 59 firearms have been handed in from the South West, in­clud­ing one woman who handed in four.

South West dis­trict po­lice Insp. Peter Mor­ris­sey said the re­sults so far had come as no sur­prise and he de­scribed the ini­tia­tive as “very suc­cess­ful”. Across the State 737 firearms have been handed in.
