Not guilty plea over road death

A MAN ac­cused of de­lib­er­ately driv­ing head-on into a car on Bus­sell High­way, killing mother-oftwo Jenni Pratt, pleaded not guilty to murder yes­ter­day.

Shaun Troy South­ern, 45, is ac­cused of veer­ing onto the wrong side of the road and swerv­ing er­rat­i­cally be­fore hit­ting 61-yearold Ms Pratt’s car near Capel in Fe­bru­ary.

Mr South­ern pleaded not guilty to one count of murder when he ap­peared in the Stir­ling Gar­dens Mag­is­trate’s Court by video-link from prison yes­ter­day.

The court was pre­vi­ously told Mr South­ern may never be fit to stand trial be­cause he had brain dam­age.

But de­fence lawyer Kathryn Hes­lop yes­ter­day said Mr South­ern would have the ca­pac­ity to fol­low the pro­ceed­ings at his trial.

Mr South­ern also pleaded not guilty to acts or omis­sions caus­ing bod­ily harm to Ms Pratt’s pas­sen­ger, Bus­sel­ton wo­man Karen Wil­liams, who suf­fered life-threat­en­ing in­juries in the crash. He was re­manded in cus­tody to ap­pear in the Supreme Court in Novem­ber.
