Mayor ‘concerned’ by behaviour

South Western Times - - News - Kate Fielding

CONCERNS have been raised about the welfare and behaviour of a councillor during a briefing session last week.

Mayor Gary Brennan had to ask Cr Michelle Steck to repeat several questions she asked during the Bunbury City Council briefing on Tuesday night saying at one point “I’m just trying to understand what you’re saying”. Mr Brennan said it was not the first time he had been concerned about Cr Steck at a council meeting. “She was having difficulty articulating her questions,” Mr Brennan said.

“Some past and current elected members and others have raised concerns with me (in the past).”

Mr Brennan said he had suspended debate at council meetings on two occasions to discuss with Cr Steck his concerns about her wellbeing. But Cr Steck – who is one of seven candidates running for Mayor – said if people had trouble understanding her questions it could be due to her “nerves”.

“Sometimes nerves kick in and other things kick in,” Cr Steck said.

“I find it hard to step up to them sometimes because they shut me down.”

Cr Monique Warnock echoed concerns saying it was not the first time Cr Steck’s behaviour had raised questions. “At last week's council briefing meeting Cr Steck was having difficulty articulating what she was saying,” Cr Warnock said.

“It's not the first time it has happened and I am concerned for her and about the image of the council.

“The council chamber is where big decisions, worth millions of dollars are made and we need to be in full command of the facts and our performance.”
