Bypass best for Bunbury
BILLY Kerr’s column, South Western Times, July 26, suggests my support for the Bunbury Outer Ring Road is about big business and the port at the expense of the broader community.
Nothing could be further from the truth. It is about Bunbury as a liveable city into the future.
Mr Kerr should speak to the residents of Vittoria Heights and their fear of Forrest Highway at the entrances to their suburb due to high traffic volumes and the number of trucks.
Or perhaps the residents of College Grove and their concerns about entering Bussell Highway amongst busy traffic going at speed and known for its crash statistics.
Residents living close to Robertson Drive say they are experiencing damage to their homes due to the vibrations from constant truck movements on a road suffering substantial wear and tear. And then there is access to our hospital.
The people who benefit most from the BORR are the people of Bunbury.
People travelling south already turn off at Eelup Roundabout. The BORR will have little impact on the decisions of travellers determined to head south. In fact, less traffic congestion may encourage more to come into our city, especially as we transform the CBD into a waterfront district.
Of course improved infrastructure creates opportunities for economic growth and that leads to more jobs. I don’t know anyone in my electorate who doesn’t want more jobs for our community.
I will always support projects that benefit local people, improve our suburbs and create opportunity. That is what the BORR offers. Bunbury MLA Don Punch
