The Finke Desert Race is the biggest, fastest and deadliest off-road motor race in Australia.

While the route from Alice Springs to the Finke River is visually spectacular, the track is rife with hazards – but for those competing, the race is a way of life.

For the first time on August 26, Bunbury will screen documentary Finke: There and Back by director and competitor Dylan Rice as part of the CinefestOZ Film Festival.

The film explores the race from within, from the contestants to the organisers and the will to beat the desert at all costs.

Bunbury events coordinator Jo O’Dea said the event would include the opportunity to gain a deeper insight at a Q&A session at Maker and Co following the screening.

“The fact Dylan has made the documentary but is also a participant in the race means he has got so many different angles and depths he can delve into when he tells the story,” she said.

“We all love watching action films and extreme sport and this is a true extreme sport people do that many Australians don’t know about and yet it is an incredibly famous race.

“It is really great to get local businesses like South West Yamaha involved in talking about the event and hooking people in who have a genuine interest.”

Ms O’Dea said the IndigifestOZ event was made possible through funding from the City of Bunbury. Tickets are available at
