Education on field for umpire

Southern Gazette (Belmont) - - SPORT -

GABBY Simmonds loves football.

Umpiring since the age of 12, Simmonds has worked to improve her performances in the local junior leagues and WAFL Colts competitions, but her career took another step this year when she was picked to officiate a number of AFL Women’s games.

The Notre Dame student said it was a lot of fun balancing her umpiring duties with her health and physical education course.

“Umpiring has really helped my professional development,” she said.

“Delivering clear and concise instructions is important in the competitive environment of a football game and is a skill that is easily translated for the teaching and learning process in the classroom.

“The AFLW is significant for women’s sport in Australia and to be part of the competition in some way is awesome.

“I feel privileged to see many women, both playing and umpiring, live out their dreams of competing and officiating at the highest level.”
