Supercars to super karts

CRAIG Lowndes, Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen took to a Belmont go kart track ahead of the Perth SuperSprint last weekend.

SUPERCAR drivers Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen swapped cars for karts in Belmont last week.

The go karting session was held ahead of the Perth SuperSprint at Barbagallo Raceway.

Van Gisbergen grabbed top spot in the hotly contested kart race, followed by Whincup and Lowndes.

Kart World owner Jasmina Purvis said it was great to have the supercar drivers tear up the go kart track.

“It brings a lot more awareness to the sport and where it can go. Everyone loves watching what they can do on a grassroots machine, without all the whizzbang they get in their V8s,” Ms Purvis said.

Whincup said getting into the go karts was always good fun and an opportunity to have a ball.

“Every single lap that we do in the car is timed and it means something,” he said.

“We just love racing and driving stuff, so to come out here and forget about the lap times and just have a laugh, it’s actually refreshing.

“It’s what motorsport’s all about actually.

“I’ve got my own kart back on the Goldy, and I’ll go out and cut laps just for that fun factor.”

The field for the Perth Supersprint was as tight as it’s ever been, according to the Red Bull Holden Racing Team driver.

“It’s really competitive,” Whincup said.

“We’ve got this new tyre, with many unknowns.

“We hate talking about tyres because it’s so boring, but it’s a massive part of what we do.

“We had 30-plus blowouts at Phillip Island last round.

“This place is hard on tyres, but I don’t think there’ll be as many blowouts because we’ve all learnt from Phillip Island.”

Race 7 of the Perth SuperSprint on Saturday was taken out by Scott McLaughlin, followed by Shell V-Power Racing teammate Fabian Coulthard and Jamie Whincup.

Sunday’s Race 8 was also snatched up by McLaughlin, followed by Supercheap Auto Racing’s Chaz Mostert and Whincup in third.
