Schools plea rejected

Southern Gazette (Belmont) - - NEWS -

THE State Government has rejected calls from South Perth MLA John McGrath to upgrade two schools in Como and Victoria Park.

In the lead-up to the State Election in March, the Liberals committed $20 million of funding to Como Secondary College and Kent Street Senior High School.

Mr McGrath has called on the State Government to not neglect the needs of the two secondary schools.

He said it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to upgrade the facilities at Como Secondary School.

“It is a good school working out of a facility that is really old and tired,” he said.

“That is why I was very pleased that that was part of our policy.

“Now I just have to work with the new government and see whether we can get some funding to upgrade this great school.”

Mr McGrath said the State Government needed to stop creating “confusion” with its “ill-conceived” plan to relocate Perth Modern School and focus instead on the urgent needs of many secondary schools with outdated facilities.

Education Minister Sue Ellery said former Treasurer Mike Nahan had “wrecked” the state’s finances, so the State Government had to take a careful and cautious approach to financial management.
