Our society not sustainable

Southern Gazette (Belmont) - - NEWS - Jaime Shurmer

MURDOCH University sustainability lecturer Catherine Baudains says Australia is a long way behind European countries in taking action on conveniencedriven waste.

“Our highly materialistic, consumerism-based society is not sustainable,” Dr Baudains said.

She encouraged people to do a bin audit to establish their biggest challenge, and to visit websites like Earth Carers, WREN, Living Smart, Zero Waste and local government websites for tips to reduce waste.

She always keeps reusable bags hooked on to her purse and in her work bag and encouraged people not to have too much stocked in the pantry that may just go to waste.

“What we throw away is a valuable resource and takes energy to produce – we are literally throwing money in the bin on a societal scale. The average Australian household throws away $1036 of food each year.”
