Time to re-think waste

YOUNG peo­ple are be­ing called on to re-in­vent waste as part of the Young Re-in­ven­tor of the Year com­pe­ti­tion, which is be­ing run by the City of South Perth and Switch Your Think­ing. Sub­mis­sions are in­vited from early years learn­ing cen­tres, pri­mary schools, high schools, com­mu­nity groups and in­di­vid­u­als and there is a $3000 prize pool on of­fer. “We en­cour­age young peo­ple in the City of South Perth to take up the chal­lenge and look at dif­fer­ent ways to re­use, re-pur­pose and re-in­vent waste,” Mayor Sue Do­herty said. “Ini­tia­tives like these help to in­crease aware­ness about re­duc­ing waste and in­spire cre­ative ways to re­cy­cle.” Last year the win­ning re-in­ven­tors took home rain­wa­ter tanks, sus­tain­abil­ity books, sus­tain­able fash­ion items, worm farms and com­post bins to con­tinue their waste re­duc­ing be­hav­iour.
