Residents oppose daycare proposal

Southern Gazette (Belmont) - - NEWS - Aaron Corlett

A NUMBER of residents have raised concerns about a proposal for a daycare centre on the corner of Archer Street and Weston Street in Carlisle.

The Town of Victoria Park will make a decision about a proposal to demolish a house on 35 Weston Street and construct the daycare centre.

A number of residents voiced their concerns at the elected members briefing session on June 6 about the amount of noise and traffic that would be created by the centre.

The council received 42 submissions during two periods of consultation in February and May, with most raising concerns about traffic, parking, safety, noise and existing daycare centres already having vacancies.

A Weston Street resident speaking to the Southern Gazette said he believed the centre would result in the loss of residential feel along his street.

“It’s a lovely street; the feedback that we get is that it’s a great residential street with beautiful trees and a wide road. But suddenly it could have a commercial development, which will not contribute to the amenity of the area,” he said.

“The traffic management report from the council says it won’t have an impact but people are already using Weston Street to go from Roberts Road and Archer Street because the streets either side have dead ends. There is a slope at the intersection of Weston Street and Archer, which means there is poor visibility.

“Another factor is the amount of noise; it will affect the people living next door, who will be exposed to that.

“There was a significant amount of people who objected to it. There were 96 letters sent out with about 40 people putting in submissions, with the majority of people raising concerns. When you have about 40 per cent of people objecting, it shows it’s not in the community’s interest.”

The centre is proposed to accommodate a maximum of 82 children and operate from 7am to 6.30pm on Monday to Friday.

The application is being recommended for approval subject to conditions that include noise mitigation measures and a parking management plan.
