Belmont nets grand final win
BELMONT’S next generation of netball stars had a stellar showing at the Smarter Than Smoking Association Championships over the long weekend.
The event at Wembley Sports Centre was attended by more than 13,000 people, with nine international teams attending.
“Although it was a large competition, the girls had no expectations except to play some great netball, meet new friends and have a great weekend,” Belmont Netball president Cathy McCafferty said.
Belmont Netball’s 12s and open teams finished third in their respective divisions, and the 13s won their grand final.
“(The 13s were) initially surprised and showed great sportsmanship when they realised they had won the grand final,” Ms McCafferty said.
Ms McCafferty said it was the first time the club had 12s, 13s and an open team representing Belmont since 2013.
“These are the result of our new development program,” she said.
The program started last year to focus on 11 to 13-year-olds in the club.
