Water safety lessons
A BELMONT swim school is offering free swimming lessons for children under five during national Learn2Swim Week.
Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre has thrown its support behind the community safety initiative to prevent childhood drownings.
Poolwerx chief executive John O’Brien, whose company is behind the initiative, urged parents to sign up their underfives to learn vital water safety skills.
“Drowning is still the lead- ing cause of preventable deaths in children under five in Australia,” Mr O’Brien said.
“We hope that by having schools like Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre supporting the cause we can get more kids in the water learning life-saving skills.”
Learn2Swim Week ambassador, Kids Alive creator and former Olympic swim coach Laurie Lawrence said it was never too early to start teaching children water safety.
“We want to see the day when we’re able to report that child deaths due to drowning have reached the magic number of zero, and if offering free lessons is what it takes then that’s what we’ll do,” he said.
Learn2Swim Week runs from September 23 until October 2, with hundreds of swim schools across the country taking part.
