Cars give way to new ideas
A GROUP of Victoria Park residents took over a parking bay to raise a point about how public spaces can be used in different ways.
A space outside of the Vic Park MiniLab on Albany Highway was reserved for the group as part of Park(ing) Day, which involves turning parking spots into temporary public parks.
Victoria Park resident Dave Lindner said the group wanted to show the community how parking spots could be used for other activities.
“It also means that there are fewer cars on the street and that parking spots are public spaces that can be used for other things,” he said.
“It’s the second year that we have done it but the movement has been going for about 12 years after it started in San Francisco.”
Mr Lindner said the Town of Victoria Park had been supportive of the parking initiative.
“It’s the precursor to parklets, which we have around Victoria Park,” Mr Lindner said.
“We relaxed in our chairs, played games, used the chalk to draw and spoke to people as they passed by.”
