THE winners of the City of South Perth’s 2017 Emerging Artist Awards were announced at the launch of the exhibition at the South Perth Community Hall on September 21.

Palmyra artist Matt Brown (22) received the $4000 major prize, the City of South Perth Open Award, for his sculptural work The Telepon Boxes.

The judging panel of Curtin University Fine Art School of Design and Art course co-ordinator, artists Judy Rogers and Jana Wallace Braddock, along with curator and artist and Neil Elliot, invested a considerable amount of time and thought into determining the prize winners for each award category.

The judges described Brown’s work as a “playful and whimsical use of found objects” and “an interesting way to display images that invites interactivity and play”.

They said the Emerging Artist Award once again exhibited a significant number of high-quality entries, with 80 artworks on display to the public until Saturday, September 30.
