Students see sunny side of challenge

Southern Gazette (Belmont) - - NEWS -

SCHOOL children felt the need for speed when the grand final of the 2018 Synergy Schools Solar Challenge was held on April 10 at Optus Stadium.

The challenge is a joint initiative between Synergy and the Science Teachers’ Association of WA that asked year 6 and 8 students to build and race model, solar-powered cars against other schools.

Dianella Primary School beat Wembley Primary School in the Year 6 final, while Presbyterian Ladies’ College defeated Kiara College in the Year 8 competition.

Penrhos College finished third in the Year 8 competition, while Belmont City College exited the competition in the quarter-finals in the same year group.

The participating schools were resourced with standardised solar car kits and curriculumlinked support materials, enabling the students to build and race the cars against other schools.

Belmont City College student Ethan Powell races his school’s car.
