Homegrown hockey stars shine
TWO local hockey stars were involved in Australia’s triumph at the 2018 Oceania Youth Olympic Games Qualifiers last month.
South Perth’s James Collins and Manning’s Caitlin Cooper were among six WA players who were in the Australian teams that played in Papua New Guinea.
Australia’s men took out first place after defeating Vanuatu 16-0 in Saturday’s final, with Collins hitting a hat-trick to finish the tournament with 10 goals.
Elsewhere, Australia’s women claimed top spot after defeating Vanuatu 29-0 in the final.
Jolie Sertorio hit three to finish the tournament with 30 goals to her name, while Neasa Flynn finished two goals further back on 28 after scoring five goals in the final.
Australia’s men had been vying for one of three qualifying spots while the women were in contention for one of two qualifying spots.
The 2018 Youth Olympic Games will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October.
The other WA players were Tom Harvie from the Ferguson Valley, Christian Starkie from Kingsley, Neasa Flynn from Ardross and Jolie Sertorio from Peppermint Grove.
