Home­grown hockey stars shine

TWO lo­cal hockey stars were in­volved in Aus­tralia’s tri­umph at the 2018 Ocea­nia Youth Olympic Games Qual­i­fiers last month.

South Perth’s James Collins and Man­ning’s Caitlin Cooper were among six WA play­ers who were in the Aus­tralian teams that played in Pa­pua New Guinea.

Aus­tralia’s men took out first place af­ter de­feat­ing Van­u­atu 16-0 in Satur­day’s fi­nal, with Collins hit­ting a hat-trick to fin­ish the tour­na­ment with 10 goals.

Else­where, Aus­tralia’s women claimed top spot af­ter de­feat­ing Van­u­atu 29-0 in the fi­nal.

Jolie Ser­to­rio hit three to fin­ish the tour­na­ment with 30 goals to her name, while Neasa Flynn fin­ished two goals fur­ther back on 28 af­ter scor­ing five goals in the fi­nal.

Aus­tralia’s men had been vy­ing for one of three qual­i­fy­ing spots while the women were in con­tention for one of two qual­i­fy­ing spots.

The 2018 Youth Olympic Games will be held in Buenos Aires, Ar­gentina, in Oc­to­ber.

The other WA play­ers were Tom Harvie from the Fer­gu­son Val­ley, Chris­tian Starkie from Kings­ley, Neasa Flynn from Ar­dross and Jolie Ser­to­rio from Pep­per­mint Grove.
