Lions rain on Royals parade
SUBIACO have stunned favourites East Perth to claim the 2014 WAFL premiership.
In wet conditions at Subiaco Oval, the Lions took control of the match in a dominant third term to beat their more-fancied opponents, who had 11 West Coast Eagles-listed players.
Subiaco piled on six goals in the term to skip out to a handy 28-point lead at the last change. From there it was a matter of holding out the final Royals charge.
The Lions were successful, claiming the win 11.16 (82) to 9.12 (66) and the premiership cup.
Chris Phelan (25 disposals, two goals) and Kyal Horsley (26 disposals, one goal) starred for the Lions.
Fellow midfielder Jason Bristow was named Simpson medallist for his 27 disposals and one goal.
George Hampson, hampered by a leg complaint, held tough to finish with three goals for the premiers.
East Perth’s Brendan Lee gathered 24 disposals, alongside defender Blayne Wilson (21 disposals) and Sam Butler (20).
Fraser McInnes was the Royals’ best forward, finishing with three goals. Fellow tall Josh Smith added two of his own in tough conditions for big forwards.
