Islamic Council president fined $300

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Como Kewdale -

THE Rivervale Islamic Council of WA president has been fined $300 for failing to secure a firearms cabinet.

Dr Rateb Jneid pleaded guilty in Perth Magistrate’s Court last week and received a spent conviction.

Defence lawyer Shash Nigam said police raided Dr Jneid’s house the day before a cabinet safe containing the weapons was due to be secured to the ground.

His home was raided in April, caught up in police investigations that resulted in several people being charged with alleged drug offences but Dr Jneid was not included in those charges.

“He had a cabinet safe, it was not bolted to the ground,” Mr Nigam said.

“He had moved house a few days prior and had arranged for a welder to do it on the Saturday.”

The magistrate described Dr Jneid as being of good character.
