Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Opinion -

FEW have the opportunity to prattle on about the things that are important to them in a public forum such as this. So here goes. I am among what beyondblue estimates will be a million Australians who experience depression this year. As you can see, it’s not uncommon. Turn to the person next to you - it’s likely they have, are or will experience it at some time in their life. And two million will experience anxiety, so be prepared for an episode even closer to home. Mental Health Week (October 5-11) has been an amazing catalyst for promoting awareness of the myriad mental health disorders affecting the community and why stigmas are not helpful or appropriate. Publicly owning my depression is a big step but if it helps to break down barriers and stereotypes and demonstrates that it can be exceedingly manageable with education and care, I’m OK with that. If this has raised any issues for you, call Lifeline 13 11 14, Kid’sHelpline 1800 55 1800 or beyondblue 1300 22 4636.
