TOWN of Victoria Park resident Abdul Abdullah is the winner of the Popular Choice Award at the 2014 Victoria Park Art Awards.

The Perth-born artist’s selfportrait Sons of Sycorax refers to the character Caliban and his dead witch-mother Sycorax from Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

The piece makes reference to the black balloons tied to the letterboxes of Muslim families and their supporters in the recent ‘Stop the mosque’ protests in Bendigo.

Sons of Sycorax received 18 per cent of the vote, narrowly edging out Emerson Lamond’s NitCPotALPT which received 17 per cent.

“We had some fantastic judges for the art awards, how- ever as art speaks to all people, it’s great to have a popular choice award so community members could have their say and choose which piece they preferred,” Victoria Park Mayor Trevor Vaughan said.

Mr Abdullah, who also won the Award for Excellence, will receive $500 thanks to Popular Choice Award sponsor Victoria Park MLA Ben Wyatt.
