River walls being shored up
AFTER having to prevent visitors from getting too close to the crumbling river walls, the City of South Perth has started work on their reconstruction.
Chief executive Cliff Frewing said the work was long overdue and should be completed in about six months.
“The walls on both sides of the Mends Street Jetty had deteriorated to such an extent that temporary fencing had to be erected to minimise risk to park users,” Mr Frewing said.
“Walls in this section of the river park had collapsed and presented a very poor image for the City, given the high profile location and popularity of the South Perth foreshore.”
After construction, work to replace the existing path with an upgraded promenade is expected to be complete by the end of April.
The Swan River Trust contributed $1 million to the project and the City funded the remaining $2.25 million.
