Teacher rocks girls’ education
SUZY Urbaniak is passionate about earth sciences and her passion and enthusiasm is rubbing off on her students.
The Kent Street Senior High School teacher received an award for outstanding initiative in promoting and supporting women in mining at a recent Women in Mining WA Annual Seminar.
The former geologist has been a science teacher at Kent St SHS since 2004.
She specialises in earth and has a reputation for infecting her students with her passion and enthusiasm for the subject.
One of the initiatives she has launched, with industry support, is the bi-annual Kent Street Women in Mining Day.
The day involves girls at the school networking with women working in the industry and engaging in hands-on activities to provide them with an insight to the range of occupations available in the mining sector.
She also hosts a Curtin University Mining Challenge at the school, which is designed to introduce primary school students to the range of careers available in the mining industry.
