Teacher rocks girls’ ed­u­ca­tion

SUZY Ur­ba­niak is pas­sion­ate about earth sciences and her pas­sion and en­thu­si­asm is rub­bing off on her stu­dents.

The Kent Street Se­nior High School teacher re­ceived an award for out­stand­ing ini­tia­tive in pro­mot­ing and sup­port­ing women in min­ing at a re­cent Women in Min­ing WA An­nual Sem­i­nar.

The for­mer ge­ol­o­gist has been a sci­ence teacher at Kent St SHS since 2004.

She spe­cialises in earth and has a rep­u­ta­tion for in­fect­ing her stu­dents with her pas­sion and en­thu­si­asm for the sub­ject.

One of the ini­tia­tives she has launched, with in­dus­try support, is the bi-an­nual Kent Street Women in Min­ing Day.

The day in­volves girls at the school net­work­ing with women work­ing in the in­dus­try and en­gag­ing in hands-on ac­tiv­i­ties to pro­vide them with an in­sight to the range of oc­cu­pa­tions avail­able in the min­ing sec­tor.

She also hosts a Curtin Univer­sity Min­ing Chal­lenge at the school, which is de­signed to in­tro­duce pri­mary school stu­dents to the range of ca­reers avail­able in the min­ing in­dus­try.
