Battle for Burswood still far from over

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Local Government Reform -

LOCAL MPs from both political parties will continue the fight to retain the Burswood peninsula within the proposed City of South Park.

After the Local Government Advisory Board (LGAB) recommended the peninsula stay within the newly formed local government, the State Government revealed it would be reviewed in five years and that the peninsula could still go to the City of Perth in 2019.

South Perth Liberal MLA John McGrath said it was unacceptable.

“When I and some of my Parliamentary colleagues supported South Perth in its bid to amalgamate with Victoria Park, I did so, on the explicit condition that Burswood remained within the boundary of the new city,” he said. “Now we are told by the government that the situation will be reviewed in five years’ time.”

Victoria Park Labor MLA Ben Wyatt echoed the concerns.

“It is clear the Premier still has plans to strip the Burswood peninsula away and gift it to the City of Perth,” he said.

South Perth and Victoria Park mayors Sue Doherty and Trevor Vaughan agreed the State Government would have a fight on its hands if it tried to take Burswood.
