City seeks your say on bridge area plan
THE City of South Perth has released its latest plan for the Canning Bridge precinct and is seeking public comment.
The City will present an information display at the Canning Bridge Library Lounge on November 8 from 1-4pm.
Created to guide the development of the Canning Bridge area, the Structure Plan is a collaboration between the cities of South Perth and Melville and is the next step in implementing a vision for the precinct, first announced in 2011.
“On the day, professionals involved in the preparation of the plan for both local governments will be available to answer questions from the community,” City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty said.
“The development of the Structure Plan from the original Precinct Vision has been very complex.
“It involved testing and detailed studies of various urban aspects, such as transport, design, infrastructure, services capacity, environment and heritage of the area.”
South Perth MLA John McGrath has welcomed comments from the State’s leading planners.
Some of the State’s leading planners have expressed views that high-rise towers should be placed along major transport routes and not destroy the fabric of established suburbs.
He said the comments should be kept in mind when making decisions about the proposed transit-oriented development at Canning Bridge.
“I can understand concern over Perth’s urban sprawl being unsustainable and the need to cater for some of the City’s future growth through higher density infill development,” Mr McGrath said. “I have even supported the concept of increasing densities in parts of my electorate of South Perth, especially in the Mill Point precinct and along major transport routes such as Can- ning Highway.
“However, with regard to the proposed Canning Bridge precinct development, I have not been supportive of disrupting viable residential areas, where the local people generally wish to maintain their current lifestyles.
The cities of South Perth and Melville are seeking feedback from communities on the Structure Plan.
