Program extends kids’ soccer season

FOOTBALL@5 is a new initiative by the Curtin Uni Football Club to get children, aged seven to 16 years, out in the park with minimal adult involvement.

The club provides the children with portable goals, coned pitches, bibs and balls on Friday evenings, from 5pm, for five-aside games.

Coaching co-ordinator Ian Morris said there was no coaching or PlayStation parenting.

“It’s been great to see between 50-60 kids from seven to 16 week in, week out playing non-stop for 75 minutes,” Mr Morris said.

“We sort the kids out on to pitches roughly grouped by age bands, though not exclusively, and away they go and play, having fun and learning to play football.

“Demand is increasing for more football opportunities. Boys and girls are looking to play beyond the official winter football season, April to September, and Football@5 is one way in which our club is providing opportunities to our community and our children to develop and grow through football.”

Football@5 is not limited to Curtin Uni JFC players – anyone can join.

There is a $5 fee which goes towards setting up costs.

Children take to the football field for a new initiative called Football@5.
