ROAD TOLL CLIMBS AS RISKY ROADS NAMED

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Front Page - Michele Nugent

AS the State’s road toll continues to soar and the holiday season looms, motorists have indentified several local roads and intersections as risky in a RACWA survey.

Eight roads in Belmont, Victoria Park and South Perth have been identified as risky as part of the campaign which RAC corporate affairs manager Will Golsby said had highlighted the urgent need for the State Government’s mid-year review to deliver an increase in metropolitan road funding.

Last week Transport Minister Dean Nalder said while the Government was road maintenance which was identified in 2009 by the Auditor General and estimated to be $800 million,” Mr Golsby said.

Mr Nalder said local government funding over the next three years would be in accordance with the projected allocations agreed to under the five-year State Road Funds to Local Government Agreement.

“Historically, local government has had difficulty spending the annual allocation provided under the agreement,” Mr Nalder said.

“It should also be noted that local government is benefiting from increased Federal funding allocations. This increase is of a similar magnitude.”

But he said the level of maintenance funding to be allocated in coming years would be dealt with in the mid-year review.

The survey results come on the heels of a WA Local Government Association’s report that found the vast majority of fatal or serious crashes happened on councilcontrolled roads, despite them receiving only a small percentage of State Government funding to maintain or improve them.
