Junior talent goes international
AFTER a successful season in the Perth rugby union competition, six local junior rugby players will head to Singapore to face international competition.
Will Offer (South Perth), Jamie Drummond, Oliver Annear (Como), Chase Ridley, Noah Shaw and Callum Roberts (Victoria Park) all play for the “Neddies” (Nedlands Rugby Union Club) under-10 rugby team.
The boys decided to enter the annual Centaurs International Youth Tournament in Singapore to cap off a rugby season where they emerged undefeated in the Perth under-10s competition in 2014.
The Centaurs tournament has attracted more than 120 teams across the junior age groups from five different countries – Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia and host Singapore.
The tournament will be played this weekend with the Cup, Bowl and Plate up for grabs in all junior grades.
Under-10s coach Mark Drummond said the Neddies boys had been in training for the Singapore tournament for more than two months since their local competition finished and were excited about the prospect of playing overseas against international competition.
“It will be a fantastic opportunity and experience for these boys to meet and play against players from different countries.
“The boys will be playing in some very humid conditions over two days in Singapore so it will be survival of the fittest.
“I’m sure they’ll acquit themselves well at the tournament and make some new friends along the way.”
The Neddies under10s are managed by Wil- son resident Tom Fearn, a former assistant coach of the Western Force Super 15 team who recently returned from a professional coaching career in Japan.
Neddies is also sending an under-11 team to Singapore along with a combined NeddiesCottesloe under-12 team.
The Neddies juniors are a pathway to Perth’s most successful senior club, with the Neddies premier grade team appearing in the Perth club finals for a remarkable 32 consecutive seasons.
