Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Opinion -

IN response to the front page article in last week’s Gazette, I am concerned that two roads in my electorate have been identified in an RACWA survey as risky.

Mind you, I am not surprised that the section where the Kwinana Freeway southbound merges into Manning Road has made it on the list.

The traffic infrastructure on and around Canning Bridge is a mess and it will be extremely costly to unscramble.

Concerning the problems associated with the Canning Highway and Manning Road merge, this is exacerbated by the lack of a southbound on-ramp to the freeway coming off Manning Road.

I have discussed this problem with a succession of Government transport ministers. They have all agreed with the need for a southbound ramp; in fact, the project has been costed several times.

While I understand that traffic congestion presents a huge challenge for the State Government as our population grows at a rapid rate, fixing the congestion on and around Canning Bridge needs more urgent consideration.

I continue to lobby the Transport Minister on this matter. I will also work with my Federal colleague, Swan MHR Steve Irons, to see whether we can access some Commonwealth funding for the off-ramp.

With regard to the intersection of Labouchere Road and Mill Point Road in South Perth, there does seem to be some confusion among cyclists when they reach this busy intersection. JOHN McGRATH MLA, Member for South Perth.
