YEAR 8 student Vivienne Holt was awarded Penrhos College’s Mathematician of the Year award.

The college held its annual Maths Night recently as part of an initiative aimed at maintaining students’ interest in science and mathematic subjects.

The Maths Mentoring Program has run for six years and principal Meg Melville said the increased interest in maths among students could be credited to the program.

The school had been focusing on the benefits of studying mathematics and the opportunities it could offer students in future tertiary studies.

“It began to cater for one exceptionally gifted student in 2009 and has now grown in number to 70 attending on a weekly basis. Maths Night is just one part of this broader program.” Mrs Melville said.

Penrhos will also introduce a space camp in 2016, giving students an opportunity to visit NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.
