Juniors try, try again in Singapore win
THREE local junior rugby players are on top of the world after winning an international junior rugby tournament in Singapore.
Will Offer (South Perth), Jamie Drummond (Como) and Callum Roberts (Victoria Park) joined fellow Nedlands Rugby Union Club under-10s teammates Oliver Annear, Noah Shaw and Chase Ridley for the annual Centaurs International Youth Tournament in Singapore this month.
The Centaurs tournament attracted more than 120 teams in the under-6 to under-16 grades from five countries: Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia and host Singapore.
The Neddies under-10s played six games over two days in their first time in the tournament and despite challenging, humid conditions, got through to the grand final unbeaten to take on the Singapore Cricket Club Academy.
In a thrilling finale, Neddies coach Mark Drummond said the boys prevailed by two tries to nil, showing remarkable defence to keep their try line from being crossed.
After the win, the Neddies players were invited on to the main stage to be presented with their winning trophies.
“The boys had acclimatised for the conditions with a training run at St Andrew’s Junior School before the tournament,” Drummond said.
“The win capped off what was a remarkable touring experience for the boys.
“It was an experience I am sure they will treasure for a long time.
“The boys are all keen to return to Singapore next year to defend their title.”
The victorious team celebrates.
