Thiele sizzles but Ascot go down
ASCOT Cricket Club: Match Results for December 6 and 13.
1st Grade: Leederville 217 (J Poletti 3-52, S Mezger 2-25, J Dalton 2-30, P Sharma 2-60) & 3-31 (J Austin 2-1) d Ascot 132 (B Thiele 54)
Leederville batted first and compiled a challenging total, with Jason Poletti having the most success. Ascot struggled against a disciplined bowling attack as Brett Thiele played a lone hand with a sizzling half-century which comprised three sixes and three fours, but was cut short after 48 balls.
3rd Grade: Ascot 124 (C Cherry 42, M Holden 32) & 6-104 (N Wills 38no) d by Mt Lawley 181 (P Gaspar 3-36, R Montgomery 3-39, D Atchison 2-31)
Ascot’s top order struggled, with Michael Holden holding up the other end scoring 32. At 6-55 Craig Cherry strode to the crease and took attack to the bowlers. Two 6s and three 4s by Chez saved face for his team and pushed the score past 100. Jason Hamling provided support with a brisk 16, but it was Cherry’s season-high 42 that stood head and shoulders over all other batsmen.
The Ascot bowlers toiled hard, but luck was on the side of Mt Lawley’s top order batsman and that was enough to get them over the line. Batting a second time it was dejavu for the top order as wickets tumbled. A brutal knock by Nick Wills – seven fours and a six – did save some face for the beleaguered Ascot line-up.
4th Grade: Ascot 119 (F Hart 31) & 0-72 (M Stevenson 44no, K Bastin 19no) d SKLP 99 (C Zaekis 4-33, M Kumar 2-4, M Stevenson 221)
Ascot were sent in to bat, and the batting highlight was Steve Symcox who was defying everything thrown at him and was joined by an enthusiastic Faron Hart. A blossom- ing innings of 31 proved his worth as a top-order batsman in the 3rds. Symcox’s act of defiance came to an end after 83 balls and 15 runs.
Early wickets by Con Zaekis had SKLP at 5-39. At the other end, Monty Kumar was similarly blitzing the SKLP batters with a handy 2-0 in his first four overs, score 7-49. With tight bowling, Ascot had triumphed by 20 runs.
5th Grade: CoolbiniaWest Perth 238 (L Pesick 3-38, R Easwaran 3-45, D Hallows 2-34) d Ascot 7174 (T Duncan 55no, L Pesick 38no, R May 37)
Coolbinia started their innings slowly but came home with all guns blazing and finished the day with 238.
Ascot lost a couple of early wickets to be 3-9 after 10 overs. Terry Duncan and Lew Pesick, two club veterans, batted out the day to leave the side 55 runs shy.
7th Grade: SKLP 8-184 (P Di Marco 4-48) d Ascot 132 (M Thomas 33)
