REPORT’S FINDING DEADLY SERIOUS
ARE you a smoker? I’m not. I just can’t get my head around why you would want to suck in that thick black tar that’s on all the advertisements. Good thing I am not because new research from the Australian National University and Sax Institute shows that campaigns need to be intensified to reduce smoking. Australian Council on Smoking and Health president Mike Daube said the report showed two-thirds of Australians who smoked were likely to die because they did. If anything else caused that death toll it would be seen as a national catastrophe, he said. Public Health Association of Australia chief executive Michael Moore said: “The conclusion is clear. We must do everything possible to encourage smokers to quit, and to quit now. We cannot stand by and see yet more generations of Australians dying, often painful deaths, because they smoked.” Next time you take a ciggy out, think about that.
