Lions can reach speeds of up to 60km/h and leap up to 12 metres. Their roar can be heard more than 8km away. They can live in prides of up to 40 individuals. A male lion's large, healthy mane says two key things - “stay away” to other males, and “come here” to females. A good mane is an indicator of health, nutrition and good genes. The lion population in Africa has been reduced by half since the early 1950s. Today, fewer than 21,000 remain in all of Africa. Three main threats currently facing lions are habitat loss, loss of their prey base to the bush meat trade, and human-lion conflict.
