KOMBI GOES FOR COOL AMOUNT

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Driveway -

A 1960 Volkswagen Kombi Microbus set an Australian and probably world auction record when it sold for $202,000 at Shannons Classic Auction in Melbourne last week.

The price, paid by a telephone bidder after a relentless battle with several rivals in the auction room, was substantially more than the $135,000 paid for a 1969 Falcon XW GT, one of Australia’s most desirable muscle cars and more than double the price paid for a 1968 Holden HK GTS Monaro 327 Coupe.

Shannons experts were confident that the once-humble Kombi – fresh from a five-year restoration – could exceed its pre-auction guiding range of $120,000-$140,000.

Popular among hippies looking for cheap, live-in transport, early Kombis have attracted a cult following.

Beautiful in every detail, the Kombi was presented in the two-tone period colours of paprika and white.

But $202,000?

This VW Kombi fetched more than $200,000 on auction.
