Start them young at library

Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - East Victoria Park -

WHILE a love of literacy can start in the womb as parents read aloud to their unborn child, the Town of Victoria Park library has a range of resources for mums, dads and babies once they have arrived.

New parents are invited to Begin With Books, a library event on March 27 covering services and resources available to them and their babies.

Over a cuppa, Youth Services Librarian Hannah Ryder will discuss specific library resources available to help parents encouraging early literacy.

Mayor Trevor Vaughan said it was a chance for new parents to join the library and make use of its resources straight away.

“Encouraging early literacy skills in babies and young children is so important for nurtur- ing a love of reading and writing and providing the best start for their future education,” said Mayor Trevor Vaughan, who is also a school principal.

The library has a dedicated parenting collection in the children’s area with books on parenting, child development, toilet training, nutrition and behavioural issues.

It also has puppets, CDs, DVDs, parenting magazines, free subscriptions to childfriendly eBook sites, English as a Second Language material and puzzles.

Other Begin with Books sessions will be held on May 13, July 22, September 23 and November 25.
