HE may have been grounded for several years, establishing a business and helping raise his three children, but Burswood builder Gary Wright is soaring high.

The amateur hang glider won the 2015 WA State Soaring Championship in a competition at Westonia in the eastern Wheatbelt, after last winning it in 2005 before folding up his wings to focus on business and family.

Competing against a field of about 30 people, including many much younger than him, Mr Wright (48) won the open class cross-country towin event in a culmination of about two years training since he gave the sport away a decade ago.

First taking flight in his early 20s, Mr Wright has now won the State title seven times and said he loved the feeling of peace he achieved while flying, but was also motivated by improving his fitness and the endurance nature of the sport.

Champion Gary Wright comes in to land in Westonia.
