Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Victoria Park -

A VICTORIA Park intersection that recorded 51 accidents – many were rear-enders – between January 2009 and December 2013 will receive a $611,680 upgrade due in part to State Government Black Spot funding.

Improvement works at the intersection of Berwick Street and Hill View Terrace will comprise two major components, including major signal upgrades worth $165,500 and civil works worth $446,179.

Main Roads WA (MRWA) will carry out the signal upgrade while Dowsing Concrete will complete the civil works after its quote came in nearly $335,000 less than the highest quote from Downer Australia.

The Town’s Renew Life director, Warren Bow, said council’s submission for funding was actioned in July 2011.

“At the time 46 crashes between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2010, had been recorded at the site,” Mr Bow said.

“A significant number of rear-end accidents were of considerable concern.”

Funding approved for the project by the Black Spot program is $760,000. The Town will contribute $253,333 while MRWA will add $506,667.
