Breeding program gets boost
PERTH Zoo hopes to expand its population of cassowaries and tree kangaroos thanks to a new and improved rainforest exhibit.
Environment Minister Albert Jacob was on hand last week to take a first-hand look at the improved enclosures and support the zoo’s global breeding program of endangered animals.
Perth Zoo is home to one male and two female southern cassowaries and this new exhibit will give keepers a chance to easily introduce the large birds during breeding season.
“It also gives zoo staff the opportunity to learn more about the breeding behaviours of these animals because so little is known about how or why they choose their mates,” Mr Jacob said.
The additional space will also allow Perth Zoo to bring over a male tree kangaroo from the Gold Coast to mate with the two females currently in the zoo.
