Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - Street Watch -

‘NIMBYs’ are alive and well and at work in South Perth. They oppose the heights of proposed ‘skyscrapers’ in the South Perth peninsula zone.

A coloured pamphlet and a Facebook site, circulated by the self-appointed crusaders, say that street trees are in danger. However, where is not stated.

And "the area does not have the infrastructure to support such developments". Trying to frighten the horses with emotional claims won't help cope with Perth's projected growth of 4.5 million people by 2050.

Numerous residents in South Perth, even those of a certain age, agree with the initiative to build so-called ‘skyscrapers’. They will help develop more commercial activity in the Mends Street area, more infrastructure and be a focal attraction as an entry-point to the City of South Perth.

The Development Assessment Panel and the City have agreed to the applications subject to due process and there are residents who silently support them.

Onward and upward. CLIVE DEVERALL and NOREEN FYNN, South Perth.
