Bottle out say residents
COMO and South Perth residents are angry that a Dan Murphy’s in the Como Hotel car park could become a reality.
The five-member panel of the Metro Central Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP) voted in favour of the development at the third hearing into the matter on Friday, April 17.
Residents have put their concerns to South Perth council about the proposal since early 2013 citing traffic, noise and the impacts of cheap alcohol.
South Perth resident Greg Benjamin, who attended the JDAP meeting, said he was monitoring the issue closely, was disappointed with the City of South Perth and had lost faith in JDAP.
“I was disappointed that they (council) were so slow to respond to this issue when it was first discussed in 2013,” Mr Benjamin said.
“I also quoted a report to JDAP by Dr Peter Howat stating one million Australian children are adversely affected by parents’ or carers’ drinking.
“Even the CEO of the Foundation of Alcohol Research and Education recently pleaded for our federal and state governments to deal with problems like family violence by tackling the ready availability and aggressive marketing of alcohol.
“I asked JDAP to take on that plea, but they ignored it,” Mr Benjamin said.
City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty said she was extremely disappointed with the decision.
“In my opinion there is no need for a Dan Murphy’s in South Perth.
“The City of South Perth has 12 liquor outlets within a four kilometre radius of the Como Hotel site,” she said.
The Mayor said council had concerns about the location of the “barn-like liquor store” and the potential to increase traffic, citing recent AAMI insurance crash statistics listing Como in the five top crash hotspots.
Although JDAP voted in favour of the development, Mrs Doherty said the matter was not over.
“Although development approval has been supplied by JDAP, the developer needs to gain approval for a liquor licence with certification from the City of South Perth.”
