www.communitypix.com.au d437106 FROM his garden studio in South Perth, two-time Archibald prize finalist Peter Kendall aims to create art that goes directly to the heart.

And it is evident in his new exhibition, Went to Sea, which breaks new ground by exploring the stunning beauty of the owl through exquisite sculptures and by examining relationships through his drawing and painting.

It is his second exhibition in a series of works and is inspired by Edward Lear’s poem The Owl and the Pussycat poem.

“The first line of the poem, the owl and the pussycat went to sea, is really just a metaphor that I use to examine the deeper issues of love, relationships, commitment, and trust,” he said.

“The poem has given me a wonderful platform to explore ideas. Just as importantly, it has opened up a whole new world for me with my art.”

Went to Sea will open at Buratti Fine Art and Robert Buratti said Kendall had created a body of work unlike anything else in the contemporary art scene in Australia.

“Peter is already wellknown as one of Western Australia’s premier artists and his profile as a two-time Archibald finalist has given him a national audience. The response to this work from collectors has already been phenomenal and I am expecting it will extend around the country and beyond,” he said.

“Audiences will see that this second exhibition in Peter’s series has been worth waiting for.”

No sooner has this work gone up than Kendall has immersed himself in another series, one which he describes as his life’s work.

“I’m endeavouring to make art that goes directly to the heart,” he said.

“To do that I am eliminating all the unnecessary techniques and thoughts that impede the message.

“This work is like an ongoing adventure for me and I hope people are going to enjoy it by letting go and stepping back to simpler times. I want them to come on a journey with me.”

To attend the opening night on May 1, contact Robert Buratti on 0408 489 570 or email gallery@buratti.com.au.
